Cronin again balances wit and jovial warmth in scenarios that will have readers laughing out loud. The jig is soon up with Duck and company found out in a humorous denouement. My Review: I love this entire series! Nathan Hale has taken history and made it accessible (with a dash of humor!). Nathan Hale tells her incredible true-life story with the humor and sensitivity he’s shown in every one of the Hazardous Tales-perfect for reluctant readers and classroom discussions. Tubman spent the rest of her life helping slaves run away like she did, every time taking her life in her hands. Facing enormous danger, Araminta made it, and once free, she changed her name to Harriet Tubman. If she could run away and make it north without being caught or killed, she’d be free. But north of the Mason-Dixon line, slavery was illegal. Slavery meant that her family could be ripped apart at any time, and that she could be put to work in dangerous places and for abusive people. Goodreads Summary: Araminta Ross was born a slave in Delaware in the early 19th century. The original Isis, called Andrea Thomas, was a high school teacher who appeared in The Secrets of Isis TV show. I’m looking into the history of the character to see how she developed. But the connection she had to Black Adam corrupted her, making for an intriguing story. In her modern interpretation, Isis acted as a superhero who sowed for peace. A character linked to Adam’s legacy is Isis, though she has roots that extend back to the 1970s. In particular, Adam has gained prominence as one of the most powerful characters in the DC Universe. DC are known for favouring Egyptian mythology through characters like Hawkgirl and Black Adam. Comics have explored ancient mythology in great detail, featuring various characters linked to different pantheons. got the award-and the smart money assumed it would and assumed, correctly, that it would also get the Pulitzer-special consideration would have derived from the image of Archibald MacLeish as the poet invading Broadway, and from the critical piety that longs for verse on the commercial stage. The only contender this year that might have been chosen on its own merits (of which I think it has very few) was Tennessee Williams’s Sweet Bird of Youth. Whenever an award goes to a playwright who is not a veteran of Broadway or to a play which is in some way unusual, the special case is almost certainly as important a factor in the voting as the play itself. Had A raisin in the Sun won because it was the best play of the year, or because its author, Lorraine Hansberry, is a Negro? Even if the play is a good one (and, with reservations, I think it is), even if it were indisputably the best of the year, the climate of award-giving would make impossible its consideration on merit alone. On the day that the New York Drama Critics’ Award was announced, a student stopped me as I walked across the campus-where I pass as an expert on the theater-and asked a sensible question. 5/30/2023 0 Comments Book greenlightsI found a reliable theme, an approach to living that gave me more satisfaction, at the time, and still: If you know how, and when, to deal with life’s challenges - how to get relative with the inevitable - you can enjoy a state of success I call “catching greenlights.” I found stories I experienced, lessons I learned and forgot, poems, prayers, prescriptions, beliefs about what matters, some great photographs, and a whole bunch of bumper stickers. Sides shows us how this illiterate mountain man understood and respected the Western tribes better than any other American, yet willingly followed orders that would ultimately devastate the Navajo nation. At the center of this sweeping tale is Kit Carson, the trapper, scout, and soldier whose adventures made him a legend. Fueled by the new ideology of “Manifest Destiny,” this land grab would lead to a decades-long battle between the United States and the Navajos, the fiercely resistant rulers of a huge swath of mountainous desert wilderness. In Blood and Thunder, Hampton Sides gives us a magnificent history of the American conquest of the West. Also, it talks to the later effects on the operations caused by the Civil War. Most of the action was centered in current day New Mexico and Arizona. In the summer of 1846, the Army of the West marched through Santa Fe, en route to invade and occupy the Western territories claimed by Mexico.
